Situated in the foothills of the magnificent Himalayan hills in the state of West Bengal, Chalasa is very famous for its natural beauty.  Being located in the Dooars region, it is also known as Dooars, which is another popular tourist destination of Assam.


 Surrounded by thick forests, valleys and tea plantations, rivers and ponds, this tourist destination is very beautiful and captivating.  The small town of Chalsa is surrounded by forests and has two major wildlife sanctuaries such as the Gorumara National Park and the Chapramari Wildlife Sanctuary.  Many species of wildlife, including elephants and rhinos, are found in these forests.
If you want to roam in an offbeat place, deceit can come.  Along with this, you can see popular place points, Dooars, Jhalong and Jaldhaka, etc. here.  Mangalabari Haat Market is also held once a week in Chalsa and is also considered as the main base for buses plying in Dooars.

Best time to visit Chalasa

 The right time to visit Chalasa is after the monsoon and the winter months.  At this time, the weather is very pleasant from September to October.  In January, this area is the coldest and at this time the temperature here is 10 to 1 degree.  You can visit Chalsa from September to March.
How to reach Chalsa
 By Road: Chalsa is located 60 km from Siliguri.  Siliguri is a major city in the state of West Bengal.  The best way to reach Chalsa is by road and you can start your journey from Siliguri.  Many buses and taxis run here.  Apart from this, you can also come here by driving yourself.
 By Air: Bagdogra Airport is 75 km from Chalsa, 2 hours away from Siliguri.  Regular buses ply from New Delhi, Kolkata, Guwahati and Chennai etc. for Bagdogra.  You can take cab or bus etc. from the airport to reach Chalasa via Siliguri.
 By Rail: The state of Siliguri is well connected to major cities by rail and the nearest railway station is the Siliguri railway station.  New Jalpaiguri railway station is the major railway station which is connected to cities like Kolkata, Delhi, Chennai, Mumbai.  The distance between NJP and Chalsa is 58 km.
Places of interest

1.Gorumara National Park

 The park has a large population of Indian rhinos and has been declared a wildlife sanctuary in 1949.  Located in the eastern Himalayas, this sanctuary also has the Murthy and the Rideak rivers.  Wildlife will be seen in this area with dense forest and grass.
In this park, many migratory birds and animal species such as Asian elephant, sloth bear, deer, Indian python, king cobra and endangered species like pygmy hogs etc. will be seen.  Gorumara National Park is 14 km from Chalsa.


 Bindu is a small village in Kalimpong district located on the border of India and Bhutan.  It is a very beautiful place, which is located in the forests and mountains of Bhutan and India.
 The Jaldhaka River at Bindu and Bindu Dam is a major attraction among tourists.  You can also learn about the species and culture and living in this region.

3.Chaparmari Wildlife Sanctuary

 Chaparamari Wildlife Sanctuary, located 30 km from Chalasa and Lataguri, is located close to the Gorumara National Park.  Chhapramari derives its name from Chhapra, a small fish species found in the region.
 Mari means abundant.  Here you will find variety of flora and fauna.  The sanctuary has a large number of elephants as well as rhinoceros, cheetahs and boars.


 Latagudi is a beautiful place located in Jalpaiguri district outside Gorumara Park.  This is a very important place as it is here that one gets a permit to go to Gorumara National Park and Chamramari Wildlife Sanctuary.
 Some of the beautiful places like Jaldhaka, Jalbong and Alipuduar, Murthy River and Bindu are some of the places you can see around it.  There are also many tea gardens and forests where one can go hiking.
